Species richness and ecological connectivity of the mammal communities in urban and peri-urban areas at Mexico City

AbstractUrban expansion has emerged as a pervasive driver of biodiversity loss in Mexican cities due to shifts in landscape composition and configuration. Hence, the preservation of forest cover, green spaces and isolated trees assume a critical role in conserving the biodiversity within urban areas. We compared mammal assemblages across 520 sites in Mexico City examining the impact of local vegetation and site characteristics (e.g., patch size, isolation distance) on diversity patterns. Then, we used a generalized linear model to evaluate the relationship between mammal assemblages (including both alpha and beta diversities) and the level of structural and functional connectivity across the landscape. We collected 5,063 records of 38 species from the sampled sites. Mammalian richness ranged from 1 to 9 spp./site, and the mean of taxonomic and functional (Functional Distance [MFD]) alpha diversities were 1.9 ± 1.3 spp./site and 0.41 ± 0.60 MFD/site, respectively. The average size of habitat fragments was 0.41 hectares, and the percent forest cover per site ranged from 0.5 to 100%. Both species and functional alpha diversities were different among the land-use and vegetation types (including protected vs. non-protected areas). There was a clear distinction (β value > 0.40) in species composition across the landscape, which was positively related to geographical distance and negatively related to connectivity between sites. We identified four main patches especially important to connectivity across the city and argue that conserving them is critical for restoring key components of biodiversity and ecosystem services in urban and peri-urban areas of Mexico City.

Unique Profiles of Postpartum Family Needs and Evidence of Racial and Ethnic Disparities: Insights from Community Implementation of Family Connects.

To delineate specific family needs during the postpartum period using data from Family Connects (FC), a universal home-visiting initiative, and to scrutinize potential racial and ethnic disparities in these needs. FC implementation data spanned from July 1, 2009, to August 31, 2021, in seven counties across the USA. Data encompassed nurse-led in-home assessments for 34,119 families. Nurses evaluated needs across four domains (healthcare, parenting/childcare, safe home, and parent support) comprising 12 risk factors. Overall, families reported high levels of need, and community connections were facilitated for 57% of visited families. Significant differences in need profiles between whites and minority groups were revealed, reflecting both disparity and uniqueness. Employing the Oaxaca decomposition approach, we found that racial/ethnic disparities in socioeconomic attributes were associated with racial/ethnic gaps in the need profiles. The event of giving birth is both high risk and high opportunity for preventive intervention. Home-visiting programs, as an evidence-based approach, must address the diverse spectrum of familial needs comprehensively.

Aquatic Bacterial Community Connectivity: The Effect of Hydrological Flow on Community Diversity and Composition

Microbial communities are vital components of freshwater ecosystems due to their role in nutrient cycling and energy flow; however, the mechanisms driving their variation are still being explored. In aquatic systems, water flow (hydrology) can impact microbial community composition through community connectivity; however, the details of hydrology’s effects on microbial connectivity remain unclear. To address this question, we used 16S rRNA metabarcoding to determine bacterial community composition and connectivity across flow transects in three connected Great Lakes waterbodies with very different water-flow regimes: the Little River (high flow), the Detroit River (moderate flow), and Lake Erie (low flow). Bacterial alpha diversity (Chao1) did not differ among the three locations or sample sites along the transects. Analyses of beta diversity using community dissimilarity matrices identified significant differences among the three locations and among sample sites within locations. Bacterial community connectivity varied among the three locations, with a significant distance–decay relationship observed only in the low-flow location, which is indicative of connectivity driven by spatial proximity. Directional analyses showed that the water-flow direction affected bacterial similarity, consistent with the expected hydrological effects on community connectivity and previous published work. Our results indicate that (1) microbial community composition varies within and among even geographically close sampling locations and (2) the specific water-flow regime appears to affect bacterial community connectivity. Including hydrology in models of bacterial community composition will improve our understanding of the relative roles of selection versus stochastic effects on bacterial community diversity and composition in freshwater ecosystems.

THE STUDY OF THE SELF-ATTITUDE OF DISPLACED PEOPLE IN THE CONDITIONS OF ADAPTATION TO THE NEW SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT

The work focuses on the characteristics of a person's self-attitude in the context of social-psychological displacement problems. This study examines how displacement can lead to changes in a person's characteristics and the specific socio-psychological challenges they face in their new living environment. The research focuses on understanding how self-attitude is expressed during socio-psychological adaptation among displaced individuals. The findings reveal that individuals who experience displacement in a new social environment tend to exhibit low self-confidence, self-management, self-evaluation, self-acceptance, and self-analysis. As a result, they often face internal conflicts and engage in self-criticism. This suggests that during the initial months of displacement, individuals develop a negative self-attitude, with positive aspects of self-attitude diminishing. However, the second stage indicates that positive changes in self-attitude are crucial for the survival and well-being of the individual and their family. Displacement and the challenges of adapting to a new socio-cultural environment are driven by the need for self-reassessment and self-acceptance. Moving from self-criticism and internal conflict towards self-esteem and self-acceptance serves an adaptive function, allowing individuals to better adjust to their new life conditions. Moreover, the study underscores the profound impact of social support networks in facilitating the transition towards a more positive self-attitude among displaced individuals. Strong social ties and community connections are crucial in bolstering self-esteem and fostering a sense of belonging, which are paramount for navigating the challenges of displacement. Recognizing and leveraging these support systems can significantly contribute to displaced individuals' psychological resilience and adaptive capabilities, ultimately enhancing their overall well-being and successful integration into their new environment.

Uranium measurements in the field using high-resolution cadmium zinc telluride detectors

A new generation of cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detectors has become available and is being evaluated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for safeguards verifications in the field. The new CZT detector, model M400, is a room temperature spectrometer manufactured by H3D, Inc. The M400 demonstrates superior energy resolution, effective isotope identification capabilities, and convenient usability features when tested in a controlled laboratory environment. These characteristics define the M400 as a potential platform for IAEA field detection applications, which could become suitable for nuclear material characterization (e.g., enrichment verification) and nuclear safeguards missions. The capabilities of gamma spectrometry codes including Fixed energy, Response function Analysis with Multiple efficiencies (FRAM) from Los Alamos National Laboratory, CZT for Uranium (CZTU) from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, and Gamma Detector Response and Analysis Software (GADRAS) from Sandia National Laboratories were adapted for M400 spectra, and the performance of the codes has been validated. This was reported in a prior work. To further validate the performance of the high-energy resolution CZT detector and the isotopic analysis codes, a field measurement campaign consisting of uranium hexafluoride (UF6) cylinder measurements was conducted at a fuel fabrication facility. A total of 34 Type 30B cylinders containing UF6 were measured using three different M400 CZT detectors. Each detector was outfitted with a custom rectangular collimator and shield made out T-Flex®, a tungsten-impregnated polymer. Measurements were performed at three different locations of the cylinder, ensuring that the measurement geometry satisfied the infinite thickness criterion. The spectra from the M400 CZT were analyzed using the code General Enrichment Meter (GEM). For analyzing the gamma-ray spectra from UF6 cylinder, the GEM code is the appropriate tool since it relies only on the gamma-ray emissions from 235U and not from other isotopes. Results from the spectral analysis were compared with the known abundance of 235U in the cylinders, as well as with the International Target Values 2020 (ITV2020). The suitability of the different underlying techniques used by the various codes for UF6 analysis is discussed. The challenges of measuring UF6 contained in cylinders and mitigation strategies are highlighted.

Diversity and potential host-interactions of viruses inhabiting deep-sea seamount sediments

Seamounts are globally distributed across the oceans and form one of the major oceanic biomes. Here, we utilized combined analyses of bulk metagenome and virome to study viral communities in seamount sediments in the western Pacific Ocean. Phylogenetic analyses and the protein-sharing network demonstrate extensive diversity and previously unknown viral clades. Inference of virus-host linkages uncovers extensive interactions between viruses and dominant prokaryote lineages, and suggests that viruses play significant roles in carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen cycling by compensating or augmenting host metabolisms. Moreover, temperate viruses are predicted to be prevalent in seamount sediments, which tend to carry auxiliary metabolic genes for host survivability. Intriguingly, the geographical features of seamounts likely compromise the connectivity of viral communities and thus contribute to the high divergence of viral genetic spaces and populations across seamounts. Altogether, these findings provides knowledge essential for understanding the biogeography and ecological roles of viruses in globally widespread seamounts.

Central to the experiences of immigrants and refugees in Australia is ethnic broadcasting, which serves as a bridge between their past and present, homeland and host country. This article delves into the multifaceted landscape of ethnic broadcasting, exploring its historical significance, current challenges, and potential pathways for future development. Historical Significance of Ethnic Broadcasting Immigrants and refugees continue to seek avenues to maintain ties with their home countries, preserve cherished memories of their origins, and find support as they adapt to life in a new environment. This need is especially pronounced for individuals who are not proficient in the primary language(s) of their host nation. Governments in countries attracting migrants recognise the importance of engaging with migrant communities to enhance their integration and bolster their contributions to national productivity. For example, the Minister for Immigration and Ethnic Affairs, M.J.R. Mackellar, noted when establishing ethnic radio in Australia that due to "a steady decline in foreign-language content on established commercial and national radio channels", and "a large increase in the non-English-speaking population in Australia", "the government ha[d] pushed ahead with ethnic radio" to provide "information, entertainment, and educational" facilities (Mackellar). Presently, the Australian Government provides annual funding to support ethnic broadcasting, which includes covering the production costs of ethnic programs for local communities, establishing new programs for specific language groups, and developing innovative projects that benefit culturally and linguistically diverse communities (Courtney). Insufficient attention has been devoted to evaluating the evolving needs and interests of various migrant communities over time (Dissanayake 113). This decline can be attributed to the satisfaction of listeners' interests through advancements in information technology and their increasing proficiency in English (Australian Bureau of Statistics), enabling them to access information from mainstream media sources. In the year 2020, there arose a pressing need to reevaluate the purposes and role of ethnic broadcasting, considering both practical and theoretical perspectives such as listeners' access to new technology to consume information, attracting volunteers, and limited financial support (Anderson et al. 57). Also, insights gained from such assessments could significantly contribute to meeting listeners' expectations, informing policy decisions in this domain, and guiding the work of content creators (Ewart 133) and also the channels in between these two ends of the spectrum, such as station managers. It is imperative to acknowledge that the role of ethnic broadcasting has evolved with broadcasting and production technology, necessitating a nuanced approach in research and creative endeavours within this sector. Furthermore, the shifting digital landscape and the widespread use of social media as a customisable platform for communication underscore the need for adaptation and innovation in ethnic broadcasting practices (Budarick). Despite its importance, ethnic community radio remains relatively understudied by researchers and academics, highlighting a gap in understanding the current dynamics of the ethnic broadcasting industry (Ewart 123). Current Challenges Facing Ethnic Broadcasting In this study, I aim to incorporate my perspective as an ethnic broadcaster to address the needs of migrants presently living in Australia. While government funding has been allocated to meet operational costs and support content development, there remains a gap in addressing the specific needs of listeners and enhancing the skills of ethnic radio presenters. Presenters of ethnic radio programs in Australia often struggle to discern the language preferences and information requirements of their audience. This challenge stems from a lack of regular communication with listeners, leaving broadcasters unaware of the issues that hold significance within their communities. To address this gap, it is essential to develop radio programs that cater to the interests and information needs of ethnic populations. These programs should cover a range of topics, including immigration matters, cultural events, council decisions, and the promotion of talents within these communities. Unlike mainstream commercial media, ethnic radio programs have the unique opportunity to focus on issues that are often overlooked but are highly relevant to ethnic audiences. Furthermore, there is a need to engage the second generation of migrants by encouraging their participation in radio programs conducted in languages they are comfortable with. This initiative not only fosters inclusivity but also ensures the preservation and transmission of cultural heritage to younger generations. Additionally, adapting program formats to align with the evolving needs and expectations of ethnic audiences is crucial for maintaining relevance and engagement. As highlighted by Tanikella, radio producers play a pivotal role in translating the needs of listeners into program formats that resonate with diasporic communities (170). By responding to the demands of their audience and reflecting locally constructed identities, media producers contribute to the representation of community identities in the public sphere. This underscores the importance of designing radio programs that are sensitive to the diverse needs and preferences of ethnic communities, thereby fostering a sense of belonging and cultural continuity. It is crucial for migrants to have access to information about available facilities, their rights, and opportunities for settling in their new country. Research into ethnic media in Australia highlights its significant role in connecting migrants to transnational networks, preserving cultures and languages, navigating new identities and communities, and facilitating adjustment to life in Australia (Hopkins, qtd. in Budarick). The growth of ethnic radio programs in Australia has been notable since its inception in 1975. Presently, the Australian community radio sector produces a substantial amount of ethnic radio content, with over 2,070 hours broadcast weekly in more than 110 languages across 80 radio stations, including six full-time ethnic stations. This vast array of programming engages over 4,000 volunteers from 125 cultural and ethnic groups (NEMBC). However, to ensure the effective support of ethnic minorities in Australia through broadcast radio, financial backing is essential. Community radio stations rely heavily on volunteers, with over 22,000 individuals contributing their time to these stations across Australia. Despite the significant volunteer effort, paid full-time equivalent staff employed by community radio stations numbered 900 in 2023 (Treasury). In recognition of the importance of ethnic media in supporting minority communities, the Australian Federal Government, through the Community Broadcasting Foundation (CBF), allocated $4.18 million from Federal Budget 2022-23 for ethnic content development purposes (CBAA, "Federal Budget 2022-23"). Additionally, various state governments continue to provide funding for ethnic radio programs through relevant agencies (Letch 18). Despite government support at both federal and state levels, the number of ethnic radio programs remain the same serving the relevant ethnic groups. However, this article suggests the need for restructuring within the ethnic broadcasting sector, particularly in content development, to better meet the diverse needs of ethnic audiences. Ethnic Radio Programs Characteristics of ethnic radio programs are multifaceted and influenced by the unique nature of the medium as well as the diverse preferences and behaviours of their listeners. Firstly, radio as a medium engages the sense of hearing, prompting listeners to visualise and imagine based on auditory stimuli. This concept, as articulated by Smythe (qtd. in Beck), underscores the importance of creating vivid "audio pictures" for listeners, especially in ethnic radio where individuals often seek to evoke nostalgic memories of their homeland. Ethnic radio programs serve as a conduit for migrants to reconnect with their cultural roots, offering aural representations of familiar sounds and languages in the absence of electronic communication resources. Additionally, Gary Ferrington distinguishes between hearing and listening, highlighting that while hearing is a physiological process, listening involves the psychological attribution of meaning to auditory input (61-7). This differentiation is pertinent in understanding how radio audiences interact with and interpret program content. Audience engagement with ethnic radio programs can be categorised into active and passive listenership. Active listeners demonstrate a high level of involvement with specific programs, frequently engaging through calls, messages, and interactions with presenters. In contrast, passive listeners tune in intermittently and may not exhibit loyalty to any station or program (Padmakumar 614). Ethnic program listeners tend to lean towards active engagement due to the limited frequency of broadcasts and their desire to stay connected with their cultural community. They often approach radio listening with echoic memories of music and language from their homeland, seeking familiarity and emotional resonance in the programming. For instance, some listeners may prefer original versions of songs from their country, even if they are no longer popular locally (Anderson et al. 21). Moreover, active ethnic radio listeners play an integral role in shaping program content and community engagement. They provide feedback, request songs, share information, participate in fundraising events like radiothons, and even express interest in becoming presenters themselves. This active involvement reflects a deeper sense of connection and ownership within the ethnic radio community (Anderson et al. 36). Conversely, passive listeners may view radio primarily as background music, enjoying the ambience without actively engaging with specific content. Their interaction with the medium is more incidental, often occurring while multitasking or attending to other activities. Overall, the characteristics of ethnic radio programs are shaped by the interplay between the medium's auditory nature, the preferences of diverse listeners, and the cultural significance of maintaining connections to one's heritage. Active engagement, nostalgic resonance, and community involvement are central themes that distinguish ethnic radio programming in its ability to cater to the needs and interests of migrant communities. To navigate the development of the technology and the challenges related to changes in the listenership, ethnic broadcasters must embrace innovative strategies that cater to the evolving needs of their audiences. One approach involves redefining the role of ethnic radio programs to encompass a broader range of topics, including immigration matters, cultural events, and community news. By diversifying content and engaging with listeners' interests, broadcasters can enhance the relevance and appeal of their programs in the digital age. Empowering Ethnic Radio Presenters Ethnic radio program presenters play a crucial role in delivering culturally relevant content and facilitating community engagement. However, recruiting skilled presenters poses challenges, particularly when specific language requirements must be met. Therefore, it is suggested, language fluency should not deter younger people from becoming involved in the sector, and youth ethnic programming in English, or a mixture of languages, should be supported (Anderson et al. 47). Kalinga Seneviratne, a former ethnic radio presenter turned academic, attests to the pivotal role of community radio in fostering broadcasting careers for migrants in Australia (11): “if not for (ethnic) community radio, I have no doubt that I would never have become a broadcaster in Australia”. There are many examples that can be given. Encouraging second-generation migrants to participate as presenters and listeners is vital for sustaining ethnic radio audiences. Surveys suggest that allocating more airtime to music could attract younger listeners, but the language preference for music content remains ambiguous (Anderson). Addressing the relevance of ethnic media for the next generation is a pressing concern, given their evolving cultural identities and media consumption habits (Papoutsaki et al. 23). However, engaging second-generation migrants poses challenges, as older community members often serve as cultural gatekeepers and are hesitant to relinquish control over language and content (Australian House of Representatives). Additionally, community radio stations can only offer limited technical training, focussing on basic broadcasting skills due to resource constraints (Cohen 1016). Training programs provided by stations like 3ZZZ, 3CR, and 3MBS cover fundamental broadcasting knowledge but may not adequately prepare presenters for professional standards (3ZZZ). Effective broadcasting requires mastery of technical operations, vocal delivery, language proficiency, and community knowledge (Beaman 43; Fleming 6-7). Acquiring essential skills enables individuals to effectively communicate through radio, aiding new and emerging communities in their transition. The Community Media Training Organisation (CMTO) could address this need by developing a new pathway course tailored to ethnic listenership, as existing training programs such as Presentation, Advanced Presentation, Audio Editing, Copywriting for Sponsorship, Creating Social Media Content, Music Interviewing, etc. (CMTO) are primarily focussed on general program presentation at community radio stations. To compete with mainstream radio, ethnic broadcasters must prioritise professionalism and engaging presentation styles to attract and retain listeners (Wolfenden 5-21). Ultimately, the success of ethnic radio hinges on the ability of presenters to bridge cultural divides, cater to diverse audience needs, and maintain high-quality programming standards. As Australia continues to welcome new waves of migrants and refugees, there is a pressing need to support their settlement process and integration into society. Ethnic radio programs play a crucial role in providing information, language support, and community connections for recently arrived migrants. By updating program formats and language groups to reflect changing demographics, broadcasters can ensure that their programs remain relevant and accessible to all members of the community. Public Service Broadcasting and New Media Public service broadcasting in Australia encompasses entities like the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) and the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS), which are funded by the government but operate independently in terms of programming decisions. These broadcasters are tasked with promoting national identity, as well as informing and entertaining audiences (Lobato & Meese 121; Cinque 11-16). The ABC, operating under a statute and receiving public funds, is expected to adhere to standards of objective journalism, distinct from commercial media driven by private interests (Finkelstein). On the other hand, SBS radio programs are tailored to language groups rather than nationalities, allowing for diverse listenership across cultures (Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications). Programs cater to various community needs, including news, current affairs, arts, culture, and sports (ibid.). Public service broadcasting in Australia differs from community broadcasting in several aspects, including licencing, ownership, operational structure, and funding policies. While national broadcasters like the ABC and SBS receive indirect government funding, community broadcasters operate as not-for-profit entities with community ownership structures. Community broadcasters are further distinguished by their obligation to broadcast local content and to represent the community they serve (CBAA). The landscape of ethnic media in Australia now faces competition from emerging digital platforms, spanning radio, television, and streaming services accessible via smartphones and computers. The next section will explore the impact of these alternative media forms on migrants' lives in Australia. Embracing New Technologies Community broadcasting has historically faced limitations in content development. However, it can be argued that community radio is where innovative content and radical programming thrive, without facing the limitations imposed by commercial interests, industry guidelines (ACMA), and broadcasting technology. Community radio primarily caters to audiences via AM/FM radio sets and digital devices. Digital convergence has transformed broadcasting, necessitating a diverse range of technology, personnel, and management skills in today's multi-platform media environment (CBAA). Presently, listeners access radio programs through various channels, including live streaming from radio stations, mobile apps like TuneIn, personal assistant apps such as Google Home and Amazon Alexa, and even television. The availability of archived content on the Internet further enhances accessibility for listeners, a feature not present in traditional radio broadcasting. Audio content producers have embraced alternative publishing methods beyond traditional FM and AM frequencies, including Internet radio, MP3 players, podcasts, and streaming services like Spotify. However, the digital transformation of radio broadcasting raises questions about the medium's nature and mode of delivery, as highlighted by scholars like Dubber and Lacey (Berry). Online streaming allows radio stations to reach audiences beyond their geographic boundaries, offering a more diverse listener base (Jackson Pitts & Harms 274). Internet radio, characterised by live or scheduled audio (and sometimes video) streaming over Internet Protocol (IP), can be accessed via computers and mobile phones with 4G or 5G data connection. Unlike conventional radio, listeners cannot request songs or participate in talkback shows, but they enjoy the flexibility of selecting content according to their preferences. Compared to terrestrial radio stations, Internet radio is cost-effective, requiring minimal infrastructure and often operating from home-based studios (Berry 7-22). Therefore, Internet radio is growing every day and mobile devices are going to play a very important part in the future of radio. According to the Australian Communications and Media Authority, Australians are listening to more audio delivered over the internet in 2022–23 compared to the previous year (ACMA). Moreover, ethnic media, including social media platforms, play a significant role in fostering social bonds among elderly individuals (Du et al.). Ethnic groups utilise various social media apps to create closed groups, share community-related information, and maintain cultural connections. For instance, platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Viber host private groups like 'Aussie Connect', catering to specific ethnic communities in Australia. In summary, conventional radio listeners are transitioning to novel audio listening technologies that offer personalised content experiences. Therefore, this article suggests developing new formats for ethnic radio programs, considering essential factors such as audience preferences, content guidelines, and leveraging available technology for listener benefit. Conclusion In conclusion, ethnic broadcasting in Australia stands at a crossroads, facing both challenges and opportunities in the evolving media landscape. By addressing the changing needs of diverse ethnic communities, empowering presenters, and embracing new technologies, broadcasters can continue to serve as a vital resource for migrants and refugees. Through collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to cultural preservation, ethnic broadcasting can chart a course towards a more inclusive and connected future for all Australians.

This paper thus explored the use of an ethnopsychology framework to understand and address the diverse needs of rural children, emphasizing the importance of culturally sensitive interventions in mainstream schools. It also evaluated the effectiveness of ethnopsychological interventions and the role of community collaboration. This article used secondary data sources to understand how the ethnopsychology approach can be utilized as a potential sustainable intervention strategy for the needs of OVC in mainstream rural schools. The results show that OVC are well-served by the cultural resources that rural schools have in abundance from a cultural perspective. The study also emphasized the significance of cultural practices and beliefs in influencing community responses and developing resilience in assisting OVC. The study supported the care, protection, and psychosocial support to OVC as significantly influenced by family and relationship networks, community-based organizations, and traditional support systems. The paper made recommendations for improving rural schools’ response to OVC needs in light of cultural sensitivity. These include boosting collaboration between formal and informal support systems, creating community networks, fostering cultural adaptation and preservation, and giving community members more agency through programs that increase their knowledge and skills. This study underscored the significance of ethnopsychology principles of community and social connection in leveraging cultural resources, context-based and responsive interventions, and appreciating and sustaining existing indigenous knowledge systems in understanding and addressing the needs of OVC in mainstream rural schools. Understanding and supporting OVC contributes towards cultivating meaningful collaborations and transformative care of OVC in the Global South. Research on User Expectations for Future Community Coworking Spaces

Driven by the rapid advancement of Intelligent technology, work practices and scenarios have undergone structural transformations, making community coworking a new urban office model. This study conducted an exploratory future research experiment using the 'setting the stage' method to uncover users' future expectations. The findings revealed dimensions of future expectations for community coworking spaces across overall, office, and non-office areas. It summarized design strategies for creating a smart ecological community coworking landscape, building a flexible shared office-life complex, and fostering interpersonal and community connections, offering references for designing future community workplaces.

Study of an evaluation method of earthquake-proof capacity of a community during an earthquake

In dealing with the occurrence of earthquakes, urban communities and people within the system should primarily consider the geological background, secondary hazards caused by earthquakes, countermeasures to mitigate earthquake disasters, community connectivity, and the impact of various indicators and criteria on the earthquake-proof capacity of the community. It is important to comprehensively assess these factors to ensure that a community is well-prepared to withstand an earthquake. This study takes Shenzhen (China) as an example to conduct a preliminarily evaluation of a method of earthquake-proof capacity during an earthquake, with the results reflecting the comprehensive capacity of communities. The evaluation framework focuses more on effectively improving the disaster response capacity and resilience of urban communities.

Promoting children’s health through community-led street interventions: analyzing sustained voluntarism in Canadian School Streets

BackgroundActive School Travel (AST) initiatives align with the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion, which calls for ‘creating supportive environments’ and ‘strengthening community action.’ However, their reliance on volunteers poses sustainability challenges. The main objectives of this study were to document the motivations, satisfaction, and experiences of volunteers involved in sustaining two AST initiatives in Ontario for an entire school year.MethodsTwo volunteer-led School Street initiatives in Kingston, Ontario successfully operated during pick-up and drop-off times of each school day. The first initiative operated for the entire 2021-2022 school year, and the second operated for the entire 2022-2023 school year. These initiatives were the first of their kind in the province of Ontario, Canada. Volunteers from both sites (n = 56) participated in online surveys and their motivations, satisfaction, and experiences of their role were compared using the 2-sided Fisher’s Exact Test.ResultsOver 80% of volunteers were highly motivated to promote safety and over 70% of volunteers were highly motivated to disrupt the status quo of unsupportive, car-centric urban environments by reimagining how streets can be used. By taking collective action to re-shape the environment around these public schools to support healthy, active living, our findings reveal that over 90% of volunteers were highly satisfied. Of the volunteers, 87% felt they contributed to child safety and 85% felt they had developed stronger community connections. They appreciated the short (i.e., 40 minute) time commitment of each shift, weekly email communications by the community organization leading the initiative, and the volunteer schedule. They also appreciated the positive social interactions during volunteer shifts, which they felt outweighed the minimal resistance they experienced.ConclusionsThis research demonstrates the importance of logistical, motivational, and social factors in recruiting and retaining volunteers for community-led School Streets. Our findings support appealing to prospective volunteers’ influence in achieving School Street objectives (e.g., improved safety) in recruitment efforts, as well as highlighting School Streets’ innovative approach. Communicating with volunteers throughout School Street planning and implementation processes and limiting traffic in the closed street zone (i.e., by excluding the school staff parking lot and private driveways from the scope) are additional recommendations based on the findings of this study.

The ‘right’ place to age? Exploring age-friendly and diversity-sensitive design in a super-diverse neighbourhood

The neighbourhood is a significant place for older adults in later life, especially given their strong wish to age in place, pointing to the importance of age-friendly design that accommodates older adults’ changing needs. Moreover, the older population is diversifying, highlighting the additional need for diversity-sensitive design, accommodating older adults’ diverse needs. Considering the importance of public places to age-friendly and diversity-sensitive design, this paper explores design that promotes community connection in an age-friendly and diversity-sensitive manner. To do so, a research-by-design study with master students in (interior) architecture was set up in a super-diverse Belgian neighbourhood. After a pre-design phase that immersed students in the neighbourhood and its inhabitants’ experiences, the students engaged in a design phase. Here, they re-designed various public places in an age-friendly and diversity-sensitive manner. The design output illustrates how various functions and intensities answer the changing and diverse needs of a super-diverse population.

Intergenerational differences in the environmental concerns of plastic waste business owners: environmental knowledge, environmental risk exposure, and community connection as mediators

Promoting environmental concern among plastic waste entrepreneurs is a crucial step towards addressing the issue of plastic pollution effectively. To comprehend the techniques for enhancing environmental responsibility within this demographic, it is essential to examine the intergenerational shifts in environmental attitudes, which can provide valuable insights. This study investigates the intergenerational differences in two types of environmental concerns (i.e., ecological worldview and local environmental issue concern) by taking two generations of plastic waste business owners in Wuzhen Town, China, as a case. The roles of post-materialistic values, environmental knowledge, environmental risk exposure via new media, and community connection in mediating the relationships between generation and environmental concern were also examined in light of the Mindsponge theory. A paired-sample survey (N = 102) was utilized to collect data. The results of path analyses showed significant intergenerational differences in ecological worldview but insignificant intergenerational differences in local environmental issue concerns. While nondaily environmental knowledge and environmental risk exposure via new media significantly and positively mediated the relationship between generation and ecological worldview, community connection significantly and negatively mediated the relationship between generation and local environmental issue concern. Although a significant difference was found in the post-materialistic values between the two generations of plastic waste business owners, this variable did not significantly predict environmental concern.

Quantum mechanical study of transition metal hydrides: Comparison of determined molecular properties with experimental data.

This study compares results of four relativistic pseudopotential basis sets, which differ mainly by their size: double-zeta introduced by Hay and Wadt from Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL2DZ), triple-zeta based on Stuttgart energy-consistent scalar-relativistic pseudopotential (SDD3), its extension with 2fg polarization functions, and combination of Stuttgart pseudopotentials with quintuple-zeta cc-pV5Z base (SDD5). Hydrides of transition metals from Cr to Zn group are chosen as reference molecules. The coupled cluster method (CCSD(T)) is used for evaluation of selected molecular characteristics. Interatomic distances, dissociation energies, vibration modes, and anharmonicity constants are determined and compared with available experimental data. As expected, the accuracy of basis depends mainly on its size. However, only moderate modification of SDD3 basis set significantly improves its accuracy, which becomes comparable to the largest basis set. Nevertheless, the time consumption is significantly lower.

Estimating Kappa within a Low-Seismicity Region in Northern New Mexico Using Data Recorded by the Los Alamos Seismic Network

ABSTRACT We quantify the total attenuation, κ, and the attenuation component due to near-surface site effects, κ0, in a region in northern New Mexico using data recorded by the Los Alamos Seismic Network. The area is characterized by low seismicity, where most of the well-recorded earthquakes have magnitudes between 1 and 2. This magnitude range poses a challenge for commonly used kappa methods because the high-frequency attenuation cannot be confidently isolated from the bandwidth in which the corner frequency roll-off occurs. We determine through synthetic experiments that estimates of κ within this range have quantifiable biases that depend on source (corner frequency), site (κ magnitude), and data quality characteristics (fitting bandwidth), which can be used to correct estimated κ from three commonly used kappa methods. Using 412 recorded earthquakes, we show that a bias correction results in κ distributions and κ0 estimates that are more consistent between the three methods, suggesting that the bias correction results in κ values with higher fidelity. Using the bias-corrected κ, we find κ0 between 0.038 and 0.049 s within the Valles Caldera and between 0.026 and 0.066 s on Los Alamos National Laboratory property, values near those commonly used in the western United States. We find that a main limitation in the quality of κ0 is the small number of usable waveforms at some stations, which will to improve as more earthquakes are recorded. This contrasts with other aspects, such as fitting bandwidth and source and path variability, which are unlikely to change in the future and will ultimately be the limiting factor in κ0 resolution. Overall, our results suggest that the bias-correction scheme presented here could potentially be used in other regions where small-magnitude earthquakes are prevalent. However, future work should look to verify that bias-corrected κ estimates show consistency with those retrieved from higher magnitude earthquakes.

Exploring the multi-level impacts of a youth-led comprehensive sexuality education model in Madagascar using Human-centered Design methods.

Comprehensive sexuality education (CSE) is recognized as a critical tool for addressing sexuality and reproductive health challenges among adolescents. However, little is known about the broader impacts of CSE on populations beyond adolescents, such as schools, families, and communities. This study explores multi-level impacts of an innovative CSE program in Madagascar, which employs young adult CSE educators to teach a three-year curriculum in government middle schools across the country. The two-phased study embraced a participatory approach and qualitative Human-centered Design (HCD) methods. In phase 1, 90 school principals and administrators representing 45 schools participated in HCD workshops, which were held in six regional cities. Phase 2 took place one year later, which included 50 principals from partner schools, and focused on expanding and validating findings from phase 1. From the perspective of school principals and administrators, the results indicate several areas in which CSE programming is having spill-over effects, beyond direct adolescent student sexuality knowledge and behaviors. In the case of this youth-led model in Madagascar, the program has impacted the lives of students (e.g., increased academic motivation and confidence), their parents (e.g., strengthened family relationships and increased parental involvement in schools), their schools (e.g., increased perceived value of schools and teacher effectiveness), their communities (e.g., increased community connections), and impacted broader structural issues (e.g., improved equity and access to resources such as menstrual pads). While not all impacts of the CSE program were perceived as positive, the findings uncovered opportunities for targeting investments and refining CSE programming to maximize positive impacts at family, school, and community levels.

A cross-sectional study exploring community perspectives on the impacts of COVID-19 in Nunavut and recommendations for a Holistic Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit approach to emergency response

ABSTRACT The goal of this study was to examine and address critical knowledge gaps and develop an understanding of both the positive and negative societal outcomes resulting from the public health measures associated with the COVID-19 pandemic in Nunavut and the interventions being undertaken to promote positive well-being. Data collection for this study included narrative, in-person interviews in Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet, Baker Lake, and Cambridge Bay between September 2022 and January 2023. A total of 70 participants were interviewed for this study. Community highlighted challenges, such as crowding and food insecurity, and concern for the collective wellbeing of the community. Strengths included financials supports, food sharing, and maintaining community connections over a distance. Recommendations included a focus on holistic health such as 1) public education and awareness about communicable disease, 2) financial supports, 3) housing, 4) access to healthcare, 5) focus on Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, 6) mental-health and addiction supports, and 7) community spaces. Community members described both strengths and challenges they believe impacted their experiences and service delivery as well as recommendations for the future.
